Small Business Owner – And The “Hustle”
Posted On: 27/07/23 - 0

As a small business owner and a seasoned sales professional, I could write a book about the definition of what the “hustle” means. And it sure isn’t about dancing at the disco.

Are You Wired For Self-Employment?

Firstly, are you thinking about becoming a small business owner? Are you already in your own business? Then you very likely know what I mean when I talk about the “hustle”. In my world, for too many years, it meant working obsessively. It meant being results driven and competatively wired to a fault. To onlookers, I may have even been viewed as too aggressive. I wouldn’t think twice about taking my computor on vacation so I wouldn’t miss any “leads”. As a matter of fact, I still do. It’s like an addiction. I can’t hep myself. Is it about the “fomo” (fear of missing out)?

Growing Up In A Family Business

I was raised to be a hard worker as a kid growing up in an entrepreneurial family. I was taught that you get all of your work done before you have fun. Work hard, play hard was the family mantra. I was driven from a very early age, and thought it was “heroic” to sacrifice family time to accomplish great things in business.

Health Matters – Always

Secondly, many would have said a work ethic like mine was very unhealthy. My life for so long had been all about adapting to constant unpredictability. I struggled with a higher than normal blood pressure, was on high alert for many years, and always in one big stressful rush.

Do Yourself A Favour As A Small Business Owner

I was serious most of my adult life. Many times I forgot to enjoy the ride. Many sleepless nights, many nights away from home for business. All in the name of “getting ahead”. What I have been learning the last few years is how quickly life goes by. I should have dialed it way back, enjoyed the simpler things in life. Unfortunately, I have subconciously lead by example, now my daughter is very ambitious and competivie as well. I have been trying to gently coach her about the importance of work/life balance.

Work/Life Balance For The Small Business Entrepreneur

Finally, the last few years, I have been strategic about having more fun and getting out for more adventure. Life is good. I feel better, I like to think I am in a better place emotionally and physically. I am not always in one big hurry, to get nowhere. After a life time of “hurry up” and let’s “giddy up”, I am working at stopping and smelling the roses. If you are passionate about your business and providing an excellent service. Don’t worry, business will continue to grow. The phone will still ring whether you are there or not. Do yourself a favour (and your staff). Take a break and enjoy the ride as a small business owner. Life is too short to be so serious. I wish my family would have provided me with these life lessons.
