Mental Health Of Small Business Owners

It is often said that small business is the lifeline of the national economy and that when entrepreneurs succeed, so does Canada. Considering the importance of small business to the country’s economy, the Canadian Mental Health Association states the  mental health of small business owners is a critical public health issue.

CMHA did a nationwide survey of 476 entrepreneurs, plus held 20 face to face interviews. In 64% of these businesses, there were 10 or less staff.

A few key points of that survey;

• 67% were stressed about cash flow. (vs. 22.9% of Canadians stress over finances)
• 34% experienced stress due to high self expectations.
• 51% experienced feelings of inadequacy

Most entrepreneurs indicated they have self-care strategies to cope with stress, few reported seeking formal help. The self-care included taking time off (45%), exercising regularly (43%) and taking a vacation (39%).

A few years ago, Paul and I recognized that we had to change how we lived our lives as entrepreneurs.  Stress was starting to show up in both of us in many different ways.  Our overall health got to a point that if kept unchecked, things could turn extremely serious.

What do we do to destress from our day? The last few years we have joined the gym, rigorously working a fitness program.  We eat a whole lot better, sleep better, continuously work at having more peace and balance in our lives.  We have realized that like owning a business, we have to continue to work at self improvement to in order to be effective as business owners.
