Fiscal and Physical Security In Your Business

Before start up of your business, think about security in your business as well. I learned how important it was for not only fiscal security but physical security in the same business immediately after start up.

Business Location

We chose our business location because it was close to home, it was also in a business zone. We were told at that point in time, there were between 40 – 50,000 cars that drove by each day. I had naively thought we would be overwhelmed with clients within in the first couple of years.

Immediate Business Issues

What we did experience immediately was crime and vandalism in the neighbourhood. We had a brick thrown at the window (thank goodness for high security glass). It still needed to be replaced. To this day we experience graffiti that needs to be addressed immediately, otherwise we are fined by the city. We had someone that passed out right outside our door that needed immediate medical attention. We also have experienced attempts at smashing vehicle windows to access inside. Sadly, I could continue with the list of grievances.

Province Wide Problem

After reading an article last week, I came to find out that this is an Alberta wide problem. I can’t help resenting that this is a way bigger problem than it should be. As a budding entrepreneur all those years ago, my focus was to build a business wisely, efficiently and profitably. We were and still are passionate about helping our community with sound fiscal security for entrepreneurs. However, there were and are many other issues that need to be dealt with in a reasonable time. Issues that cost money, and take away from time that is required to run a business.

Businesses Directly Affected By Crime

According to the CFIB, the share of Alberta small businesses that are directly affected by crime and safety issues has almost doubled in the last year (October 2024). Crime increased by 24% in 2023 to 54% in 2024.

Vandalism, theft, garbage, and waste are the most common types of crimes reported. These crimes take an emotional toll on entrepreneurs as well. 72% of these owners worry about their personal safety and that of their staff and clients.

Expense To The Business Owner

On the average, it cost $5,750.00 in the last 3 years to fix or replace crime related problems. This has included stolen inventory or equipment and vandalism repairs.

Addressing Safety Concerns

More than 50% of business owners have changed how they provide a service or product to their customers as a result of the crime. Some entrepreneurs have shifted to appointment only services, locking doors during business hours. Other options have been moving from brick and mortar to online sales only. An additional 71% have invested in security, such as surveillance cameras, window bars and the hiring of security guards.

Bottom line, not only is it important to have fiscal security for your business, but to have physical security too. What are you doing to ensure both for you, your business, your staff anf clients?
